Which Visa Do You Need for Yoga Teacher Training in India?

Namaste. The visa question causes more anxiety than any posture — and it should not. Thousands of students navigate it every year. Here is a clear, honest overview to orient you. One essential note first: visa rules change, and only the official Indian government portal — indianvisaonline.gov.in — is authoritative. Use this article as your map, and that website as your law.

The good news: yoga is officially recognised

India’s e-Tourist Visa explicitly lists “attending a short-term yoga programme” among its permitted activities. This is not a grey area or a loophole — the Indian government wrote yoga into the tourist visa on purpose. For the large majority of our students, a standard e-Tourist Visa is exactly the right document for a 200 hour training.

The e-Tourist Visa in practice

Applied for online at the official portal, typically approved within 72 hours, available to citizens of 160+ countries. It comes in variants — commonly 30-day, 1-year and 5-year validity — with stays generally up to 90 or 180 days depending on your nationality and visa type. A 2–6 week training fits comfortably inside any of them. Fees are modest (roughly $10–$80 by nationality). Apply 1–2 weeks before travel; avoid third-party “agent” websites that charge triple for the same form.

When a Student Visa applies instead

India also offers a Student Visa route for long-term formal study of yoga at registered institutions — typically for courses of six months or more. If you are planning an extended stay for successive trainings, that is a conversation worth having with the Indian embassy in your country. For a single 200 or 300 hour course, students overwhelmingly travel on the e-Tourist Visa.

What you will need to apply

A passport valid 6+ months beyond arrival with two blank pages; a recent passport-style photo (digital); a return or onward ticket; and basic accommodation details — your course confirmation from the school serves here. After acceptance we provide every student a confirmation letter with the school’s address for exactly this purpose.

Practical wisdom from hundreds of arrivals

Print your e-Visa approval and keep a digital copy offline. Answer the arrival officer simply and truthfully — “attending a yoga programme in Rishikesh” is a perfectly normal answer heard a hundred times a day at Delhi airport. Fly into Delhi (DEL) or Dehradun (DED); remember our airport pickup from Dehradun is included in your course fee.
