Can a Complete Beginner Do a 200 Hour Yoga Teacher Training?

By Renu Singh, Co-Founder & Course Director · Updated August 2026 · 6 min read

Beginner students practising at Rishikesh Yoga School

Namaste. Of every ten letters I receive, four contain the same worried sentence: “I am only a beginner — can I really join a 200 hour teacher training?” Let me answer as a teacher of twenty-five years: yes — and in some ways, you carry an advantage. Let me explain honestly.

What a 200 hour training actually is

The 200 hour course is the internationally recognised foundation level. It was never designed as a finishing school for advanced practitioners — it is the systematic beginning: how to breathe, how to practise safely, what yoga actually is, and how to share its basics with others. A sincere beginner is exactly who the syllabus was written for.

The flexibility myth

You do not need to touch your toes. Read that again. Flexibility is a result of practice, not a prerequisite — and teaching skill has almost nothing to do with it. Some of the most attentive teachers I have trained arrived stiff as ladders; their own struggle made them precise, patient guides. What you need instead: reasonable general health, willingness to wake early, and sincerity. That is the entire entry requirement.

“Flexibility is a result of practice, not a prerequisite for it. Sincerity is the only entry requirement that matters.”

The beginner’s hidden advantage

Experienced practitioners often arrive with habits to unlearn — postural shortcuts, studio styles, assumptions. A beginner arrives empty, and in yoga an empty cup is the best starting vessel. You will learn the traditional method cleanly, from the ground, the way the lineage intends.

How a small batch changes the equation

Honesty requires saying: a beginner can be lost in a batch of forty. This is why batch size is the question I urge every beginner to ask. In a group of ten — the maximum we accept — your teacher adapts each posture to your body from day one. Nobody performs; everybody learns. In small batches, “beginner” simply is not a category that matters after the third day.

What beginners find hard — truthfully

Not the postures. The early mornings, the first week of muscle soreness, and occasionally the emotional openness that sincere practice brings — these are the real challenges, and they pass. By week two the body adjusts; by week three students wonder how they ever lived differently.

Must you want to teach?

No. Roughly half our students take the training purely to deepen their own practice and understanding — the certificate is simply a bonus. Transforming your own life is reason enough to spend a month by the Ganga.

Your next step

If the fear was the only thing stopping you, consider it answered. Read what a real day looks like, begin gently with three simple breathing practices at home, and when you are ready, our 100 Hour Foundation course or the full 200 Hour training will meet you exactly where you are.
